Follow the exploits of the Mathews Family as they bumble their way around the States....What could possibly go wrong?
The Concept!
The plan is to drive around America in an RV visiting as many cool exciting places and experiencing as much of the culture as possible in 6 weeks.
It would be nice to do it without getting lost!...Glenn
It would also be great if we could do it without a backseat driver!...Kate
... and if we could do it without killing each other or our children it would be even better.

Don't mess with Texas
Pic is of our first professional bullriding comp....sooooo cool!
Yesterday was a big day on the road, we left the grand canyon about 10am and hit Geronimo New Mexico at about 3pm, took in some petrified wood, some tee pees and a lot of really bad souveniers. Then we pushed on to Alberquerque to stay the night. After a massive night's sleep we went to check out cowboy boots for Glenn - tick. I also snuck in an awesome Stetson hat and amazing silver belt buckle for my new (Mexican) belt. Then we kitted the kids out with new duds (love how cheap textiles are here) and didn't really feel like driving so we caught our first professional bullriding meet last night after deciding on impulse to stay another night - awesome! Then we decided we weren't tired so we got a few hours under our belt in the general direction of Texas. We ended up at some dodgy RV park (at 2am) that we didn't really like the look of (thanks Tom Tom) so we took our chances with the big rigs at a truck rest area. After a good night's sleep we hit the road this morning and rolled into Texas at lunch time....let the God bothering billboards, crucifix adorned trucks (and, well, anything), "yes Ma'am"s and "God Bless America"'s begin!
We hit Amarillo first and happened upon a gun fair (Glenn was doing cartwheels) and thought it would be wrong not to check that out. It was a strangely bizarre mix of firearms, collectibles and politically and religiously motivated interest groups all under one roof. Glenn drooled on guns and I picked up some amazing little things.....like a cowgirl poster from the 1950's and some solid silver hand made cufflinks for a friend who collects them.
We then hit the old part of town and explored the original route 66 main street which is still as it would have been when my folks passed through 45 years ago. We decided to brave the biker pub (with the kids!) and had a cold beer and people watched a while. Every day we see at least ten things that we think only exist in movies but are actually totally true to life, amazing.
Then we hit the road again before stopping at the gucci truck stop we are currently using for its wi-fi connection. The mind boggles.
The kids are settling into the routine of life in the RV, they have clocked up some 3000 kilometres in the last week without much complaining.
I'll attach pics separately with captions so you know what you are looking at!
Love Kate (and team) xo
